In this compilation of the first 4 volumes from the PL8S series, Josh Hey dials up grooves from different area codes, all hitting equally hard with warm beveled edges.

Painting vivid pictures of times and encounters across America, Hey speaks through dialects across zip codes in order to craft versatile aural environments. Electric piano whirls and presses onto the slap of slung down percussion on ‘Florida’, ducking sinuously into a crunchy bassline. On ‘Pennsylvania’, a steady drum track embosses itself into the swell of lush voices. Rhythmic bones are bare in ‘California’, microtones sliding along each other slowly being interjected by phased frets. Bass drips like honey on dynamic cuts on both sides, beneath drums that crackle and dance - there’s no fuss in this east coast native’s beat work.

PL8S calls on a sonic palette ranging from samples and effects to surreal washes of noise, with booming bass and percussive punch as ever present forces. Using his own deft audio chopping or through the likes of collaborations with Malik Abdul-Rahmaan and Amanda Amor, grit and heat are supplied in equal measure to introspective ambience.
Heading up and down both coasts making stops along the way to meet with friends and family, Hey charts out his journeys in this sonic log. It’s the loved ones in his life that have shaped his experiences from state to state, culminating in the tapestry of emotions and textures to be uncovered in PL8S. Bridging across scenes and stances, Josh Hey presents two sides of tribute to the sidewalks he has walked.

PL8S volumes 1-4 offer up a cohesive library for fans of the series, while offering up a fresh archive for new listeners to chart their own courses through Josh Hey’s dropped pins. Catching up with Josh always reveals him to be somewhere new, and this latest compilation points to that with compass-like focus. Lock in.
